Guest Blog: A Morning Spent at Dekkersvlei Vineyards

There are places that feel like they’ve been waiting for you – quietly existing, rich in story, and ready to share something special. Dekkersvlei Vineyards is one of those places. Just 45 minutes from Cape Town and a quick turn off the N1, this vineyard in the heart of Paarl offers an experience that stays with you long after the last sip.

When I arrived, I was greeted by the kind of warmth that feels genuine – not rehearsed. Laughter from the deli drifted through the courtyard, music played softly in the background, and the atmosphere buzzed with a sense of calm energy. It’s lively, yet strangely peaceful; like time slows down just enough for you to savour it.

But what truly sets Dekkersvlei apart is its history – and its daring innovation. This is the home of the world’s very first White Pinotage. A grape that’s deeply South African in origin, reimagined with brilliance. The Pinotage grapes are vinified without their red skins, transforming what is traditionally bold and robust into something beautifully delicate – golden, aromatic, and unlike anything else.

The Dekkersvlei Experience

I joined the “Taste the Original” Tour, and what unfolded was much more than a typical wine tasting. It was a story told through every pour. Our sommelier guided us through the farm’s journey – from its historic vines to the people who’ve poured their hearts into perfecting each bottle. Between tastings, I found myself learning about Paarl’s terroir, the craft behind the White Pinotage, and the spirit that drives this vineyard to keep innovating.

The wines themselves are remarkable – full-bodied reds that carry the essence of the soil, and whites that dance with freshness and finesse. Every glass felt like a reflection of the land: warm, authentic, and quietly powerful.

As I left, I couldn’t help but feel that Dekkersvlei is more than a vineyard – it’s a place where South African heritage meets a modern sense of creativity. A place that tells its story not through words, but through the taste and texture of its wines.

If you ever find yourself on the N1 heading out of Cape Town, make the short detour. Walk through the vines, share in their story, and taste the world’s first White Pinotage at Dekkersvlei Vineyards.
