The story of Dekkersvlei Vineyards begins in 1693, when the original farm was established in the fertile valley beneath the Klein Drakenstein mountains. From these early vineyards, generations of growers laid the foundations for a legacy of Cape Winelands viticulture.
1996 - A new vision takes root
In 1996, the Richardson family breathed new life into this historic land, founding Mellasat Vineyards. With a fresh energy and a pioneering spirit, the property was reimagined, and noble cultivars such as Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Pinotage were planted – setting the stage for wines that would capture global attention.
2007 - A world first in winemaking
In 2007, Mellasat made South African wine history by creating the world’s first White Pinotage. This innovative, barrel-fermented expression of South Africa’s signature grape captured the imagination of wine enthusiasts around the globe. Today, it continues to inspire curiosity and admiration worldwide, with a dedicated following both locally and internationally.
2025 - A return to origin
In 2025, the Aquila Collection recognised the enduring heritage and distinctive character of the Dekkersvlei name. Embracing this legacy, the farm returned to its original identity as Dekkersvlei Vineyards and proudly joined the Aquila Collection’s portfolio of premier South African safari and hospitality destinations. This new chapter honours centuries of tradition while ushering in a renewed focus on sustainable farming, conservation, and unforgettable guest experiences.
