The history of Dekkersvlei Vineyards date back to 1693, when the original farm was established in this fertile corner of the Western Cape. With its granite-rich soils and dramatic landscape, the land has always been well-suited to agriculture. But it wasn’t until 1996 that its full potential as a premium wine estate was brought to attention.
That year, Stephen Richardson – a British entrepreneur with a passion for wine – acquired the land and founded Mellasat Vineyards, naming it after his three children. What began as a vision soon evolved into a pioneering wine estate that would go on to break boundaries in the South African wine industry.

Spectacular Surroundings in the Paarl Winelands
Located just 45 minutes from Cape Town, Dekkersvlei Vineyards enjoy sweeping views of the Paarl Valley, framed by its iconic granite domes and rugged terrain. This landscape isn’t just stunning to look at – it plays a vital role in shaping the wine.
Warm days, cool nights, and mineral-rich soils create the ideal conditions for producing terroir-driven wines with real depth and character. Every glass tells a story of the land – of sun-drenched slopes, steady hands, and nature in balance.

Redefining the Vineyard: A Commitment to Quality
From the outset, Stephen Richardson and viticulturist Poena Malherbe set out to transform Dekkersvlei’s vineyards with an eye for innovation and sustainability. Older Chenin Blanc blocks were replaced with classic varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Chardonnay, and of course, Pinotage – South Africa’s signature wine. Today, each wine reflects the care taken in the vineyard, the patience in the cellar, and the unique fingerprint of Dekkersvlei’s terroir.

The History of Dekkersvlei Vineyards: The First White Pinotage
In 2007, Dekkersvlei Vineyards (then known as Mellasat Vineyards) made headlines by doing something no other South African wine farm or estate had done before: producing the world’s first White Pinotage.
Crafted from red-skinned Pinotage grapes but vinified as a white wine, this innovative expression defies expectation. It’s fresh, textured, and subtly spiced – a white wine with a red soul. Often described as “a red wine in white clothing,” it has become the estate’s flagship and a must-try for any curious wine lover.

A New Chapter With the Aquila Collection
In 2025, the farm returned to its roots by reinstating its original name, Dekkersvlei, while joining the Aquila Collection, a prestigious portfolio of conservation-focused tourism destinations that includes Aquila Private Game Reserve, Inverdoorn, and Kuganha Tented Camp.
This partnership marks a new era for Dekkersvlei Vineyards: one that honours its heritage while embracing the future through sustainability, conservation, and elevated guest experiences. Whether you’re tasting wine in Paarl or spotting wildlife in the Karoo, this is a story of connected journeys – from vine to veld.
